How does it work?
This page is only intended to explain the parts and the functioning of the e-cigarette for sensible and responsible use.
Use of an e-cigarette with or without nicotine by young people under the age of 18 or non-smokers is not recommended.
What is an e-cigarette?
An e-cigarette is an alternative to tobacco smoking and consists of a battery and an evaporator. The biggest difference with tobacco smoking is that there is vapor and therefore no combustion with smoke.
At the touch of a button, vapor comes out of the mouthpiece that simulates smoking tobacco. The evaporator is filled with e-liquid specially designed for this purpose with or without nicotine. The battery applies power to the evaporator element, causing the e-liquid to evaporate. The "smoking" of an e-cigarette is therefore also called fumes. Daily maintenance consists of charging the battery and filling evaporator with e-liquid. In addition, one regularly replaces the evaporator element in the evaporator, also called the coil. This coil contains a glow spiral and cotton. The e-liquid from the tank is absorbed by the cotton and thus keeps the filament wet before the evaporation process.
What do I need?
The base consists of the battery, a matching evaporator and a charger. Once you have possession, you only have to purchase e-liquid and coils to be able to continue to fume. There are many types of e-cigarettes, so appropriate advice from a specialist is always recommended. In our stores you can also try out most products yourself (for a small fee in connection with the tobacco law).
Evaporator
The most important part of the e-cigarette is the evaporator. The type of evaporator has the most influence on the vapor experience.
A distinction is made between evaporators that simulate the smoking of a cigarette (MTL: Mouth to lung) and evaporators that smoke more like a water pipe (DL: Direct lung). For the transfer of tobacco and for the regular smoker, the first type, the MTL evaporator, is usually recommended. The so-called mouth-to-lung or two-step traits mimic the smoking of a cigarette and are also modest in vapor production. An MTL evaporator is characterized mainly by a narrow air inlet and a DL evaporator has a spacious to very spacious air inlet. With most modern evaporators this air supply can also be set as desired. The difference between MTL and DL evaporators also affects the appropriate nicotine strength; for DL evaporators, a quarter to a half of the nicotine strength is usually chosen with respect to an MTL evaporator.
The evaporator consists of:
- The driptip: The mouthpiece that you place in the mouth when you take a puff. You should clean these regularly.
- The tank: Here you do the e-liquid. Make sure that you only fill the outside of the tank, but not the middle tube.
- The coil: The evaporator element in the evaporator. You should replace this regularly. (every 1 to 2 weeks)
- The airflow control: This regulates how much air resistance you have when you take a puff.
Filling the evaporator depends on the model. Consult the manual beforehand to see if you have an evaporator that is filled from below or via the top. Evaporators that need to be filled from below must always be turned upside down before you screw the evaporator open. Nowadays tanks also have a so-called child-proof closure, which causes the closure to continue. In that case, press the part in and open it.
The battery
The part that provides the evaporator with the appropriate current strength is called the battery, battery carrier or mod. Some batteries have an adjustable voltage or wattage, replaceable batteries and / or screens with setting options. Many basic models now also have the possibility to adjust the current intensity. The advantage is that this adjusts the evaporation rate. For long puffs you lower the voltage, for short puffs you turn the voltage higher again.
The battery often has the following parts:
- The battery indicator: This allows you to read how much capacity the battery has before it is empty and needs to be charged. Depending on the model, this is shown in dashes, percentages or by means of an LED color with legend in the manual.
- The activation button: This button almost always has 2 functions:
- The first function is clear, to take a puff you keep this button pressed.
- The second function is switching the battery on and off. Depending on the model you have to press the button 3 or 5 times in quick succession. This is mainly to prevent the activation button from being used during transport or storage. If you just have the battery on the table or in your hand, you do not have to turn it on and off every time, as power is only used during a puff.
- The power indicator: If you have a battery where you can adjust the Voltage or Wattage, you can read here how high or low you set it. Some models only show options as low / medium / high or work with an LED color code. Refer to the manual of your battery for more information.
- The power selector: To adjust the Voltage or Wattage use this button or buttons. This is often a plus and minus button but can also be a single button with which you can rotate through the options. With advanced mods you also need to choose the right menu. Batteries without a current selector usually work with a fixed voltage which you can not adjust.
- The micro-usb input: Use this port with the supplied / recommended charging cable and wall plug. You can also use the USB port of your computer.
CAUTION: DO NOT use SMARTPHONE wall plugs to charge your e-cigarette, these are far too powerful and can damage your battery.
Coils
The part in the evaporator that provides the physical evaporation is the coil, the evaporator element. This part is a glow spiral and cotton enveloped by a metal frame. This sensitive part deserves some attention in the use to achieve the maximum lifetime.
How to use: A newly installed coil should always be retracted for at least 3 to 5 minutes before the first use, this must first be sufficiently saturated with e-liquid. If you use larger and / or low resistance coils, you must also pre-wet them.
Replacement: If you notice that the amount of vapor is decreasing, the vapor tastes less, the evaporator is leaking, or the taste is burning, the coil needs to be replaced immediately. The old coil should no longer be used.
Use:
Make sure there is always enough liquid in the evaporator and the coil remains saturated.
Always turn off the battery when storing the e-cigarette, unwanted activation may cause the coil to burn.
Keep the activation button only pressed during a puff and not too long before or after.
Keep in mind that sweet e-liquids can reduce the lifetime of the coil faster, therefore they have to be replace earlier.
Volts, Watts, Ohms?
As a rule, you can find a suitable setting without any knowledge of electronics. You set the mod to the wattages on the coil, starting at the lowest setting and then increase the wattage or voltage in small steps as desired. A too low wattage can give a sputtering coil and / or a wet vapor and too high wattage can burn the coil. Even easier, you can also look at the Voltage, if it is between 3 to 4 Volts, the evaporation is in balance. (Voltage is namely the "voltage" between the set wattage of the battery and the resistance of the coil.)
TIP: To calculate the suitable wattage on a battery that you can not read Volts on, you can use the following formula:
(Volt x Volt) / Ohm = Watt
How long does the battery work?
The useful life of a full battery can not simply be determined by the battery capacity shown in mAh (milliAmp hours). The coil resistance (Ohm) used determines how much ampere is used per puff. The lower the Ohm value of the coil, the more wattage is required to facilitate evaporation. Our specialists can inform you at which combination you only need to recharge once a day.
For instance, a 900mAh battery with a 1.6 Ohm coil will therefore be used just as long as a 5000mAh battery with a 0.2 Ohm coil.
What exactly is e-liquid?
An e-liquid usually consists of the following ingredients: Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerin (VG), flavoring, deionized water and, if desired, nicotine. There are countless flavors that you can choose from. When switching tobacco, the neutral tobacco flavors are more suitable than the fruit and cream flavors.
Can I use any e-liquid?
No, there is a difference to take into account. PG and VG together make up about 90% of the e-liquid. The relationship between these two ingredients ultimately determines how thick / syrupy or just watery an e-liquid is. Because PG is more fluid than VG, we make a distinction based on viscosity. As a rule, thin liquids with a higher PG (50% or more) are used in mouth-to-lung tanks, often with medium to higher nicotine levels. Thicker liquids with a high VG (70% or more) are mainly used in the direct-lung evaporators and almost always with low to medium nicotine values.
The liquid thickness influences the absorption speed to the evaporator element via the cotton. An MTL tank often has coils with small cotton openings, a thick liquid does not flow smoothly enough to keep the cotton wet. Vice versa, a DL tank often has coils with large cotton openings, a thin liquid then flows too smoothly through which your coil can fill. In general, you can assume that an MTL evaporator can have an e-liquid with up to 60% VG and a DL evaporator up to 80%, sometimes 90% VG. 100% VG liquids are unsuitable for almost all evaporators with factory coils. Used for this often with a so-called dripper or RDA; a self-built evaporator without a liquid reservoir where the liquid is dripped directly onto the cotton and the coil.
Which nicotine strength is suitable?
It is important to note that the nicotine strength is shown in milligrams per milliliter (mg / ml). The nicotine strength also determines the intensity of the vulture also called throat-hit. This varies from 0mg/ml (no nicotine) to a maximum of 20mg / ml. The points below are based on the use of a mouth-to-lung evaporator. For use in a DL evaporator you need to reduce these values by a quarter to half or even lower.
- 16 mg / ml nicotine - medium heavy shag / heavy cigarette
- 8 mg / ml nicotine - regular and medium-sized cigarette
- 4 mg / ml nicotine - light and medium-sized cigarette
- 0mg / ml nicotine - no nicotine, not comparable to a cigarette
Average consumption with an MTL evaporator is between half 3 fillings of 2ml per day, depending of course on the previous smoking behavior. The daily consumption is often higher with the DL evaporator. Often the nicotine is reduced during the period of use by using lower nicotine strengths or mixing strengths step by step with lower doses. Remember, if you reduce to a lighter strength but use twice as much ml per day, you still take the same amount of nicotine.
Example: A 2ml evaporator filled with e-liquid of 8mg / ml contains a total of 16mg of nicotine. If you mix with 50% 8mg / ml and 50% 4mg / ml the total strength becomes 6mg / ml. (4 + 8 = 12/2 = 6). There is then 12mg of nicotine in the 2ml tank.
Is it safe?
Because of the new legislation we cannot refer to research results on the safety of the e-cigarette with respect to tobacco. You should consult other sources for this. However, the e-cigarette also has side effects. The PG in the liquid has a slightly drying effect and the skin can become somewhat drier. Some side effects may also include reducing or stopping smoking. Note, some people are allergic to PG, this can have immediate side effects such as a sore or swollen throat, but this can also occur after some time. If you notice this, discontinue use immediately and visit a doctor if symptoms persist.
CAUTION: Electronic smoking / vapors are not intended for people with cardiovascular disease, pregnant or breastfeeding women, people under 18 years of age and people who have problems with the airways. Always keep bottles of liquid away from children and pets as the contents are toxic to direct consumption (such as drinking). Read the package leaflet before use.
